St. Ninian's Isle

St. Ninian's Isle

A sand tombolo links mainland Shetland with St. Ninian's Isle.

It is Shetland’s wild environment of cool, clean tidal seas, rich in microscopic plant and animal life which is the basis of the abundant and varied marine life found all round these islands.

St Ninian’s Isle is connected to the mainland of Shetland by the finest example of a shell sand tombolo in Europe. At the far end of the beach, in the ruins of an ancient kirk, a School boy found the famous Celtic St Ninian’s Isle treasure.
